"They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe." ~ Acts 2:42-43a
I LOVE Acts 2! I get chills and goosebumps ever time I read this chapter! What pure, raw passion those early believers had in the spreading of the Gospel! What has happened to our sense of awe? Why are believers so often passive and seem to place no value upon what God has done for us? How can we justify making Christianity a "private" belief? I wish I could go back in time and be there when the Holy Spirit fell upon the believers on the day of Pentecost! What an experience that would be!
I have been thinking about the lack of passion so evident among believers today. What a tragedy! I think part of it may be that as Americans, it is easy to forget that we are to walk according to the power of Christ. We have everything so easy in this country. We have immediate access to anything and everything we could possibly want. We can worship God without the fear of persecution, imprisonment, or death. Yes, these are great benefits and I praise God for the freedom He allows me to enjoy! Yet at the same time, this freedom grants American believers the opportunity to become lazy in our faith. We have so many idols that can supplant the place of Christ in our lives.
I'm not really sure what point I am trying to make. I guess I just wish we could all be Jesus fanatics...in the good sense of the word. I wish we could regain that passion, that love, that awe for what Christ has done for us! When was the last time you sat down and just pondered the wonder of who God is and what Jesus has done for you? When was the last time you were so excited about Him that you just couldn't keep it to yourself? May we live each and every day absorbed in the wonder and awe of the mighty God we serve!
